Client:
Sydney Olympic Organising Committee.
Description:
FCT Flames is a provider of burner and control systems responsible for creating the flames at the stadium for the Olympic Games. The Olympic Coordination Agency (OCA) now has this equipment.
The project began with the construction of a scale model of the main stadium to simulate the aerodynamics of the structure and to test the influence of winds on the cauldron flame. The modelling data forms the basis for the design of the combustion system, which produces a reliable and safe flame with high visual effects under a certain range of environmental conditions.
FCT’s engineering team conducted small-scale tests and technical evaluations to ensure that our design meets the requirements of SOCOG. A high degree of redundancy is built into the design.
We outsourced manufacturing to our qualified Australian subcontractors and supervised the entire process. The FCT project team supervised the installation of the systems and successfully operated the cauldron.
With the support of the FCT Flames Team, the cauldron operated perfectly at the Opening Ceremony and throughout the duration of the Olympic Games.
Ric Birch, the instrument director of SOCOG, congratulated the FCT team: “I sincerely thank and admire the FCT team for creating another memorable moment in the history of the Olympic Games.”
